Tesat's new high-power Ka-band output multiplexer


The growing popularity of High Definition TV (HDTV) along with ever-increasing demand for faster data rates requires that telecommunications satellites be capable of a substantial increase in both output power and bandwidth, particularly in the high-frequency Ka-band, which is growing in importance for the satellite industry. Currently the two primary drivers of Ka-band usage are HDTV direct broadcast services in North America and satellite-based broadband Internet access in various parts of the globe. A critical component for the new generation of Ka-band satellites is the Output (De-)Multiplexer (OMUX), which combines or separates various frequency bands for efficient transmission to the ground.

In response to these developments, Tesat (DE) has introduced a high-power 20 GHz OMUX which manages these technical challenges by exploiting a novel temperature-compensated aluminium technology. The underlying filter technology, which was developed by Tesat with the support of ESA under ARTES 5.1, paves the way for next-generation HDTV and broadband services that satellite operators have been planning.

“This new multiplexer concept represents a key enabling technology for HDTV and other advanced services,” says Fabrizio de Paolis, RF Payload Engineer at ESTEC. “TV broadcasting is still the most important segment of commercial satellite business, but broadband services have tremendous potential in many parts of the world.”
