In an activity supported by ESA, a software package called VECMAP was developed that uses Satellite Navigation and Earth Observation data to populate an online database, allowing researchers to map high-risk areas.

SAFETREE

Status date: 26 January 2015

SAFETREE will provide forest fire risk assessment and airborne patrol routing for the airborne surveys. The proposed prototype of the operational monitoring system will provide objective information for the identification of areas and conditions that may lead to fire ignition.

VICOMESTRA

Status date: 26 January 2015

This project is a critical step to the introduction of HD media streaming services from mobile terminals in 2015. The solution is proposed to demonstrate dynamic video transmissions using the latest HEVC video codec running on a portable encoder combined with the latest Inmarsat BGAN HDR and GX satellite services.

SafeRail

Status date: 14 January 2015

The objective of SafeRail is to improve the safety at Rail Level Crossings (RLC). In terms of accident prevention, RLC are demanding spots since two disparate transportation systems are intersecting (road, rail respectively) and neither of them completely controls the situation. In response to this, SafeRail provides a flexible and secure solution at a moderate price, using latest advancements in satellite technology.

iVOICE

Status date: 14 January 2015

This study evaluates improvements to existing voice analysis technology. It is coupled with high fidelity communications signal and GNSS data, aiming to detect situations of mental strain and fatigue in operators. With the aim of offering a new technology – iVOICE, integrated VOIce analysis via satellite Communications Embedded in time and safety-critical environment. It also investigates the potential to develop services linked to high-risk and high-stress environments or dislocated domains, including heavy equipment operation, ground and air transportation for private and commercial use, as well as applications for future use in distributed health care for remotely living populations and peace-keeping communication and navigation services.

High Precision Navigation System for Trucks

The project analyses the feasibility of an assistance service for drivers of truck-trailer combinations while reverse parking. This is a challenging maneuver because of the complex dynamics and difficult tilt determination between truck and trailer. The service provides GNSS-based information about position, headings and tilt angle of trucks and trailers, steering wheel guidance and predicted trajectory visualization in images from satellites and a rear-mounted camera.

SELIAT

Status date: 12 January 2015

SELIAT stands for the feasibility study Safe Emergency Landing in Alpine Terrain. It has investigated a service in aviation that shall provide geographic information about suitable landing sites to support off-field landings in alpine areas with difficult terrain. This information will be available to pilots in their cockpit. The information may be required either as part of an operation of a search and rescue mission or in case of a technical failure in the aircraft.

SARONTAR

The SARONTAR (Situational Awareness and Command & Control of Rescue Forces in Alpine Regions) project comprises the demonstration and pilot implementation of a satellite-based operations control system for a more effective and a more coordinated proceeding of the rescue forces in alpine rescue missions.

SAPI&NS

Status date: 12 January 2015

The SAPI&NS study aims to improve the effectiveness of Search And Rescue operations for civil and military operators (so-called dual use). With satellite communication and satellite navigation, the involved personnel and vehicles (esp. helicopters and boats) can be tracked and status information can be collected.

The solution is conceived to be used across different scenarios (air, ground, sea) and will next to tracking services also offer tools for management and coordination of operations.

IDRC

Communication and access to information are key requirements for public safety services responding to an emergency. However communication capabilities are often compromised or destroyed. Reliable alternatives must be rapidly deployed.

The IDRC study defines and assesses the technical and business feasibility of an operational service providing a wider access to the benefits of space capabilities in the first 72 hours.

European-wide Mobility, Safety and Efficiency Management for Logistics Enterprises

Status date: 08 January 2015

The objective of this project is to improve the energy efficiency, transport safety, security and vehicle tracking capabilities of logistics and transport service providers in geographical areas with and without GSM coverage.

For this purpose, innovative telecommunication technologies will be developed for a logistics and fleet management solution and the feasibility of the use of these technologies within climate protection mechanisms will be assessed. Thus, ICT and climate protection will be linked with space technologies in order to support the achievement of the project aims. The space assets involved are satellite communications, earth observation and satellite navigation.
